Wasteless 2
This exhibition took place at the Way Out East Gallery at the University of East London in March/April 2024.
The artists selected shared an interest in using materials - be they found, foraged or recycled - to explore approaches to history, craft traditions, storytelling, interdisciplinarity and collaboration.
My pieces involves interactions between living plants and handmade weaving/netting. The plants grow and climb, up and around the woven textiles to become a living piece exploring interspecies kinship and human and nonhuman co-existence.
For this work I used fibre made from dandelions, daffodils, bluebells, day lilies, water hyacinth, crocosmia, nettles and rush as well as waste products such as plastic bags and bio material made at UEL textiles department. These pieces follow on from a recent project about the commons, which focused on how the social and ecological challenges we face today are linked to complex histories of ownership and land enclosure. Our reciprocal relationship with nature is key to reviving a modern commons and enabling a better world.
